A request to my blog readers regarding StumbleUpon

Over the last few days, more than one of my Geeky and Meeky toons have been submitted to StumbleUpon by a few of my online friends.

While I appreciate your gesture, I request my regular blog readers not to submit any more of my "Geeky and Meeky" cartoons to StumbleUpon.com as it has already featured there a few times and I'm not sure it's helping generate any real interest among users of that community. Yes, the number of visitors does increase for a very short time, but that doesn't mean a thing to me. I also removed the StumbleUpon.com icon from here, so that I'm not seen as actively encouraging people to submit my articles there.

This probably goes for most other social bookmarking sites.

Call me anti-social :p

  1. So, either Drew said to cut down on the bandwidth or you don't want to draw any more low brow visitors who can't get the simple punchline of a cartoon...:>

  2. Heh, bandwidth is not a problem, we don't use nearly enough to start any complaints yet. I say pump up the bandwidth. And in fact, checking, over past 70 days since the last reboot of the server, the server has only recieved 1.99GB and sent 3.06GB of data in total. We're well below what we are allocated each month, I think the server is only hitting like 2-3% of the monthly data allowed.. :)

  3. OK, I won't submit any more. I can't say I understand your motivation if it's not bandwidth, but you're right that StumbleUpon traffic is less valuable than almost any other kind. Still, any traffic can lead to conversions, so how can it hurt?

  5. MrCorey, you're partly right. I do feel annoyed at these "hit-and-run" social networking users who cannot have the courage to identify themselves properly because they make a negative remark.

Drew, I know that. But still, it was not for bandwidth reasons.

Troy, I guess it's hard to understand my motivation. But I am a bit shy of too much publicity and I felt that since my "Geeky and Meeky" toons have already got coverage from that source, it might be seen as spamming if more users submitted those same toons

Titanium, yes, at last, somebody who takes my word for it... :p

  7. Hari, yeah, I was just responding to Corey's assumption of bandwidth on the server. The only thing I think the server couldn't handle is getting slashdotted, but that's most servers. ;)

  8. Hee hee. Maybe it could withstand a /. Install Xcache to take care of caching the PHP stuff and maybe it just might not even breathe heavily with a visit (not that I'd be able to get you slashdotted, though).

  9. Drew, I don't know if it's the effect of being linked from social bookmarking sites, but comment spam has increased greatly in the last couple of days. I disabled user registrations for the same reason. >:XX

MrCorey, I prefer not to get dotted or slashed or slashdotted. :p
