I've not exactly been blogging actively, but I've been writing a few community articles on TheAdminZone forums. Mostly they're about community building and forum posting. Here they are:

How to leave a community or stop posting at a forum
Small community admin tips, tricks and solutions
Framing community rules - a guide

Update (more articles):

Influencing community behaviour by your leadership
Effective use of emoticons to handle online communication
The case against SEO - why social marketing is better for small communities

Feel free to leave your thoughts and comments. :)

  1. well written. I agree with the discussion on the third one- no rules and trying to introduce them is bad. These have come at a good time- I'm looking at starting a forum for my youth group.

  2. and with the "how to leave a community" - reducing myself to the sub fora that matter to me, and cutting it down from there helps. Looking at LQ- isn't it interesting that as LQ has grown, general became non-post-countable? I think you have been at LQ for about the same time as I have (*checks* yep, you have. ) I like your study of forumology.

  3. Thanks for the observations, titanium_geek. :) I moderate the "Community review" forum there and have done several community reviews. It surprises me how many forums with 2 members and 10 posts have rules that sound harsh and officious and span pages and pages... I mean, it's good to have rules, but generic rules can actually hurt a growing community. Rules should be fine-tuned to a particular community's requirements and no admin can find out how to make such rules without actually having the community in the first place ;)If a new community should have rules, it should be short and simple and friendly in tone.
