For a while now, I have been considering the idea of drawing up a list of the best applications for Linux in 10 broad categories. The purpose of such a list would be to cover as many areas as possible while not overwhelming any single category with too many apps. I also thought it would be a good idea to involve my readers in this exercise so that I would have more choices to add to the final list than the ones I have come up with.

The ten categories would be: Now the hard part would be to draw up a list of the best five apps for each category. For the purposes of this list, it would be a good idea to limit the contest only to Open Source (that means no Opera, Acrobat Reader or RealPlayer - sorry folks!). The other limiting factor is that this is open only for desktop Linux apps, so enterprise Linux apps and server software are excluded from this list.

I welcome nominations in all categories. Please post your nominations as comments here so that I can draw up a final list soon!

  3. Aww. I *like* Opera and RealPlayer.Anyway, I nominate TomBoy, AbiWord, ROX filer, ZSNES, aterm, XMMS, LostIRC, and Gweled. Should be pretty obvious what catagories they fit into.I refuse to nominate Firefox because, though it is a great program, it eats up ALL the system resources on this old laptop, something Opera does not do. It's also painfully slow on any computer under 600MHz. :-P

  4. James, thanks for your recommendations. Interesting apps. I've not heard of a couple of them. Should check them out once my main machine has been repaired. Until then I'm stuck with Windows :(

  5. [...] Category: Word processing and publishing Posted by hari under Top 50 Linux Apps at 2:47 pm In this category for the top 50 Linux apps, I have a few good recommendations. I don’t use it much, but it’s definitely good for writing short and simple documents. [...]

  10. Jim, I've no idea about webcam software. I'm still trying to get my inbuilt webcam in my HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop but I don't know how to activate it.
