Turned on comment moderation for new visitors

This shouldn't affect the regular commenters on my blog or ones who commented before with the same e-mail ID. I have turned on comment moderation for comments from new visitors because I've been getting hit by a spate of spam recently.

My Dearest Spammers,

I know this blog hasn't been updated in a while and you're concerned about my inactivity and so want to provide me with some cheer, but I've not abandoned it completely. Also your URLs won't appear here, because I filter out HTML for comments. So go away and stop making a nuisance of yourselves. :-P

Now then, back to our regular programming...

  1. That's a good move, I think, hari. Although, now I won't have as many comments to read in my feed reader. LOL.

Perhaps you might want to look into Akismet as a possible help with this problem. Then, you can turn off moderation again. I'm not a coder, but it looks like the API is friendly toward several implementations.

  2. I'm such a dummy. I forgot the link would be sanitized. Perhaps you could pull the tag off my previous comment (or delete it entirely. :D )

  3. Thanks, MrCorey. Yes, I would like to implement some kind of spam protection scheme, but since this is a custom script, I'm not sure how I would deal with it entirely.

I will research into Askimet or some other solution. I prefer a solution that is entirely on my own server though.

  4. You're on a custom install and getting spam?
With a Wordpress setup you get a kabillion more spam than usual simply because that's what the bots all code for. Each day I usually delete about 20 or so.

  5. Spammers seem to target any web form. It doesn't matter whether it's wordpress or not. Of course, having a customized captcha really does cut out the automated bots though.

I don't think WP or any other script is specifically targetted though. I think it has to do with the search rank of the website targetted.
