Update: Transfer done

Literaryforums.org and this blog will be moving hosts shortly. Hosting has been kindly donated by my good friend trickykid and I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all the help he's given me and answered my questions patiently. Being a complete newbie to the nuances of hosting and DNS, I have learnt quite a bit from him in the last couple of days as we exchanged plenty of e-mails back and forth. :D

So expect to see a short downtime for both my sites (I'll try to keep this as short as possible, but to ensure correct transfer, I won't be hurrying myself over the procedure ;)). harishankar.org has already been transferred and seems to be working well currently.

  1. Seems as if this site replicated rather quickly to use the new server from my ISP but not the main literaryforums.org. Posting this as a test as well to make sure comment functionality works with database and site, etc.

  3. Hey, do post in detail about how you migrated, where you booked your domain, etc. --- your entire experience basically so that a newbie can easily migrate

  4. Hey Sudipta, I just re-uploaded the files and the database in the new server, made the config file changes and changed the name server to point to the new host in my domain hosting panel.I haven't changed my domain name and registrar. It was all due to Drew (a.k.a trickykid) who helped me make the transfer smoothly so he would be better qualified to explain how this was done.

  6. Yeah Ray. This server looks much more powerful than the host I was on. The server load as shown by the vbulletin admin panel is quite low now.

  7. I think it's great that most hosting providers give great prices on hosting domains. When I first registered a domain back in 1998, I think I was paying around $25 to $35 a month for hosting of my domain. But the problem I see now is when you do sign up for a cheap host provider, your usualling going to be stuck on a server with 250 or more other domains. Your share of the resources are only 3% to 5% in most cases.I use to host with such providers, then I realized I could host myself on my own cable connection. Then a baby came along and I also realized I had friend who had actual colo space, so I jumped on board, got some decent 1U rack mountable servers and here we are. I figured what I had out there was overkill, so why not host a few people I know. :)
